2009 - Sale Format - "Pick Of The Pen"
Many of you are probably already familiar with the "Pick Of The Pen"
sale format. It has been used a lot in livestock sales over the past years and
is a very simple and straight forward way to sell livestock. In a nutshell, here
is how it works.
- Animals are penned before the start of the sale according to quality. A
pen layout with location of the pens and the cattle that are in them will be
posted on this website prior to the sale, and will also be available at the
check-in desk from the sale clerk, Chrissy Driggers.
- Try and arrive prior to the start of the sale, so that you have
sufficient time to visually evaluate the bulls and cows. No animals will be
brought into the sale ring during the sale, so you will have to rely on this
visual appraisal, plus catalog information to make a good decision on which
animals will best work for you.
- The bulls and cows will be sold on a pen by pen basis. Bidding will be
opened on each pen, and the highest bidder has his or her pick from that pen
at the price they bid. They also have the option of buying two, three or all
animals in that pen for that bid, if they so desire.
- After an animal has been sold from that pen, then bidding opens up again
on the remaining animals in that particular pen, until either all animals
have been sold or there is no starting bid price. At that time, the pen will
be "passed" and the next pen in line will be sold in the same manner as the
first.
- Any animals left in a pen, after that pen has been passed, are for sale
at the clerk's desk at the starting bid price, on a first come, first served
basis. No animals will be sold for less than the starting bid price.
- Bulls will be priced in three starting bid price categories. Good
bulls start at $1500, Better bulls start at $1700 and
Best bulls start at $1900. During the auction, they will increase in
sale price in $100 increments, until only one bidder remains.
Example of how the sale will work:
- There are six bulls in the #1A - Best Pen of bulls. All are PB Simmental
Bulls.
- The auctioneer will open the bidding on this pen of bulls at $1900.
- Someone bids $1900 for the pick from that pen.
- The auctioneer raises the bid by $100 to $2000.
- Someone else bids $2000 for the pick from that pen.
- The auctioneer raises the bid by $100 to $2100. Someone bids $2100 for
the pick from the pen.
- At that point, no other buyers are interested in paying any more than
$2100 for the pick of that pen, so the bidder number that agreed to pay
$2100 has his or her pick of Pen #1A.
- They may pick one, two or even all six bulls from Pen #1A for $2100
each.
- They choose two bulls from Pen #1A and those lot numbers are removed
from the bidding.
- Then the auctioneer starts the bidding at $1900 for the remaining four
bulls in Pen #1A.
